FRESH, SWEET & STURDY

The most unusual element of the music performed by the Syrène Saxophone Quartet on this CD is of course the works themselves: a string quartet transcribed for four saxophones, an orchestral work transcribed for four saxophones, and an original work composed for the same four saxophonists. We should note at this point that the Syrène Saxophone Quartet plays with the subtlety of a string quartet just as well as they play with fiery orchestral temperament, as well as — according to their motto — with sweetness, strength and acerbity. They can even play with a wonderfully ardent rawness, as can be heard in Syrènes, specially composed by me for these four young musicians.

THE SYRÈNE SAXOPHONE QUARTET
Four professional female saxophonists who have named themselves after the Sirens from Homer’s Odyssey: sea goddesses who seduced sailors with their divine voices. Syrène strives to make the sounds of the classical saxophone known to a diverse audience. It is the players’ energy, their musical qualities and their subtle communication that makes them so beloved by their listeners.

The Syrènes studied at the Conservatories of The Hague, Amsterdam and Utrecht; they were also the first wind ensemble to be welcomed to the prestigious Dutch String Quartet Academy. The Syrène Saxophone Quartet is a frequent guest in major concert podia in Holland and abroad.

Syrène’s motto is ‘Fresh, sweet and sturdy’: talented, spicy, but with a delicate female touch. Their individual talents are heard at their finest when combined as the Syrène Quartet.
